155 Yahoo Science Coast Guard begins hearing on Texas oil spill (AP)

FILE - In this Jan. 23, 2010 file photo, a barge is seen making a large impact gash in the side of the Eagle Otome after the two vessels collided causing as much as 450,000 gallons of crude oil to spill, according to the U.S. Coast Guard in Port Arthur, Texas. The pilots of a tugboat and tanker that collided in a Gulf of Mexico waterway, causing the worst Texas oil spill in 15 years, were aware of how close together their vessels were but were apparently unaware they were about to collide, according to audio recordings played Tuesday, March 9, 2010 during a Coast Guard hearing. The Jan. 23 collision off of Port Arthur dumped 462,000 gallons of crude oil into the Sabine Neches Waterway, forcing its temporary closure and coating some wildlife in oil. No one was injured. (AP Photo/Houston Chronicle, Julio Cortez, File)AP - An 800-foot tanker struggling with poor visibility and strong winds apparently failed to center itself in a narrow waterway off the Gulf of Mexico, possibly contributing to a collision with a tugboat that caused the largest oil spill in Texas in 15 years, according to testimony and evidence presented at a Coast Guard hearing on Tuesday.
